After recently discovering that ridiculously amazing "Step F2" Stepmania hack, I figured I'd be better off investing in good home pads instead of waiting for my local D&B to upgrade.

Obviously arcade pads would be the best, but I have no idea where to buy them. I'd buy an arcade pad in a heartbeat if I could actually find someone that was selling one.

I've also heard of those "Precision Dance Pads", but I'm rather iffy about spending $350 on them; I'd want to try them out first. Has anyone played on them? From the few videos I watched, they certainly look good enough, and the creator, who claims to be a die-hard dance game fan, says that they're very good for high levels of play.

Are there any other good custom-made PIU pads, that can be used with Stepmania?

Did some more research, watched some more videos and talked to some people who own the Precision Dance Pads PIU pad; it seems solid enough. Even Stepmania's site says that it's pretty much the best you're going to get, outside of buying arcade pads.

Went ahead and ordered one, but, bleh..."6 week waiting period". Ech. Suppose I'll report back in 6 weeks when I get it.

I guess it wouldn't help at this point, but the major reason I started hunting for a machine myself was just because I never could find well-reviewed home pads.  Plus for $350 per side, that comes out to $700 for a full set, and I paid $800 + shipping for my SD cabinet a few years ago.  So I'd just suggest keeping an eye out for an arcade machine and selling whatever parts you don't need, although that is a pretty big hassle and you can completely forget about the pads being portable or easy to put away.

So let us know how you like them!

I can't really buy a machine because there's no room for it in my (parents') house. And even if it was just the pads, I think they'd still object to having two 200lb hunks of metal sitting in their basement. Hell, getting them down into the basement would be a pain in itself; carrying that much weight down a narrow staircase would be horrible.

The PDP pads are only 20 pounds, and pretty thin too. Nice and portable. And no having to screw around with modding them; they're ready to plug and play with Stepmania right out of the box. And yeah, they may be $350, but shipping is free.

I'm not expecting them to be Arcade-pad quality, but they certainly look like they're insanely better than the soft mats. It's that, plus the idea of being able to connect it to Step F2 and play every single song from every single mix right within the comfort of my home, which really drew me towards buying one. I want to play Pump at home, but the soft pads just piss me off with how terrible they are. (and I'm kinda bored of Exceed SE's small song list)

Buying my own PIU arcade cab is certainly on my bucket list, but just not really possible at the moment, so PDP pads are the next best thing. And yeah, I may only have one of them, but if anything, that just gives me a reason to continue going to D&B.  :yay: If the quality turns out good enough though, I'll definitely buy a second one. So many fun doubles charts that were removed in/before Fiesta.

Meh. after going arcadepads I just cant go back to home pads, Buying anything other than an arcade pad now just seems like a total waste of money to me. Hell negotiate a way to keep them. Or hell. keep them outside if you have to (Yeah it would ruin them over time but fuck, ARCADE PADS! they cost LESS than PDP`s)

Arcade pads are just... Too good... Too damn good. The look, the feel, everything.

Yes, I would love arcade pads and they're the absolute best, but they're not feasible, and I can't find any. PDP is the next best thing.

So, I actually bought two of Precision Dance Pads PIU versions about two years ago when they were still starting out.  In fact, I'm the reason they now have a default "Arcade" skin that looks like Fiesta EX/2's arcade pads.  I have to say, I've never had a more accurate home pad than these.  Even having owned a metal Red Octane DDR pad, it was never as sensitive or durable as these pads.

I'm in the planning phase right now of building my own mini arcade setup to include a stand (with bar) that holds the pads in place and provides ground stability, and a micro PC that just runs Stepmania for both PIU and DDR.  These, in my opinion, are the best pads on the market for the US unless you want to pay the ungodly shipping rate for an Argentinian company that builds metal pads with lights in them.  I couldn't afford two grand for that, and I wouldn't pay that now that I've experienced these.  They're so light weight, and depending upon your setup, ultra portable so if you want to bring them to a friends house or an event, it's an easy chore.  Lemme know how you like them when they finally arrive!

BTW, StepF2 has been a godsend for at home pumpers.  I am loving the constant updates!!
