Just seeing if anyone around here plays, either live or online.

I'd like to call myself a student of the game. Over the past year I've read books, watched countless videos, played a few hundred thousand hands online, and hit up the casino poker room a couple times. Lately my thing has been limit HORSE games (hold'em, omaha hi/lo, razz, stud, stud 8). I love to play the weird oddball games such as triple draw, badugi, pineapple, etc, because hold'em, you know... it's hold'em.

After a year of playing I've crunched the numbers and I'm overall a winning player, so I've certainly beat the luck variance, and lately my profits in online poker have rivaled my wages earned at my job. While all at the same time, I absolutely despise any other gambling-related games. I've been too spoiled by seeking positive expected values in hands to where I'll never touch a roulette or slots table, haha. Hell, the math and psychology involved in this game has leaked over into lots of other areas of my life and helped me to become a more clear and rational thinker, as ironic as that sounds (considering it's freaking gambling).

Anyone else in here play? If so, where?

I'm glad poker has helped you become a better thinker, Turkey...because the emotional ups and downs have been more than enough to confirm with me that I shouldn't do it.

Seriously. I have played it before, for minuscule amounts of money (a $5 starting fee, if that's what I can call it), with some college friends. I played well enough, but winning big pots one round and then losing almost all my money the next has literally brought me to the point of yelling and hitting stuff and it REALLY didn't do good for me in many ways.

It's very much like why some people don't drink, actually. I've just had to TELL myself that, for my own sake and sanity, I should NOT play poker for any real money. Even though I know it does wonders for others, I don't have that level of psychological or physical control--either with my own feelings, or with the "addiction to gambling" aspect--that others have.

I do love watching it on TV now and then, and it IS a great game, and I'm happy to play with worthless chips in friendly games. Don't laugh.

Current piano projects: None atm.

Some of my performances: Feux D'artifice, by Claude Debussy, La Cathedrale Engloutie, by Debussy, Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62 no. 1, by Frederic Chopin, Ballade no. 1 in G Minor, by Chopin, Amberley Wild Brooks, by John Ireland, Prelude in D Minor, Op. 28 No. 24, by Chopin

Show me a person who describes anything as "overrated", and I'll show you a person who's run out of good ideas.

That's the biggest thing that separates those who can play from those who can't. You can spend hours upon end playing ABC poker, doing everything right and making all the right decisions, but when some idiot comes in, plays like a jerkoff, and sucks you out on the river all your hard work can go down the crapper at once. Then you start playing badly, pissed off, trying to get what you lost back. (called going on tilt) That's the one thing you have to overcome. After 100 hands, even if you're a world class player, you can lose. After 1000 hands luck just won't keep you up... after 10000 hands it's an anomaly if you're a bad player who's still winning, and after 100,000 hands, there is no such thing as luck and the skill in the game is comparable to being a good chess player. Thing is, most people don't have the patience for it or the interest or mindset to improve their game.

The thing that keeps me going is the level of game theory involved when playing against good players. Using reverse-reverse-reverse psychology to fool an opponent into not putting you on the hand you have is a hell of a lot of fun.

That song makes me rage. I hate it, ugh.

But Brazil is always behind on new songs. I swear, I heard One Republic's "Apologize" there playing, which died out in america :P

Anyway about poker: I usually play the free ones, the only good free ones are on Pogo and Zynga. I'm average at the whole game. Some days I'll go in with 3k and cash out with 14k. Some days it'll be vice versa.
