Another direction Andamiro could take to help this issue is have some type of built in security that messes up the game if hacked or altered outside of official updates.

I dunno, I'd think skilled hackers could work around that in due time... not to mention what if some sort of error occurred causing a wipe?

the very first step anyone takes into hacking something like this is to backup the HDD so if anything happens they can re-write the data to the HDD. and just keep attacking the data again and again and again as they see fit.

Pro series lockchips (DS1963) used a method that would essentially destroy the lockchip if it were tampered with too much, Pump it up future games would need to A> have tamper protection on lockchips and have copy protection on the HDDs

Why not give suggestions to AM on information security issues? They may help for future games as well.

An associate of mine did, and implimented them. Only for the original security team to throw a fit, switch to the old zero bootloader and microdog that have been insecure for years. And thus released the game.

Tldr; seniority is more important to andamiro than quality

I've been told that they didn't "have enough time" to test out his new bootloader, but it worked out to be completely fine.

I don't get why Andamiro hired these folks to develop better security for them only for their work to ultimately be unused. Lack of time, my ass, they could have spent some time testing out his stuff that could have been implemented if they were that serious for enhanced security.

The security was done and done a good....6months before release? They had plenty of.time.to.test it. Then last minute they axed it so the could make the game out to the various yearly arcade events that andamiro attends.

In the end they just stabbed themselves...

I guess what I was getting at though was a potential liability issue in case something went wrong with the idea of wiping a HDD - which would also depend on local laws I guess - I mean, sometimes extreme copy protection ideas, or seemingly extreme, can go very bad - remember years back the fiasco over SONY putting on what essentially amounted to a rootkit on music CDs that people bought, copy protection that operated on such a level where it left a user who popped it in their CD drive potentially vulnerable?

And yeah, rule #1 of hacking any game is always back it up, HDD or CD-ROM, or DVD-ROM...  heh, learned that a lot back when I was hacking Sonic the Hedgehog SEGA Genesis/Megadrive games, and again when attempting to hack DDRMAX JP for the PS2.

Why are hacked mixes still a thing anyway? Are we not at a point where Stepmania can emulate the game?

Nothing's better than the product presented in its original format.

It's probably best at this point to not use StepMania as its engine for any future Pump games.

Of course, I'm only saying this because t's already an enormous pain in the ass to heavily revise some of the Korean data for Infinity.
