I love Castle Shikigami, Gunbird, Bangai-O!, lots of them. If I hear about a good one, I'll give it a shot.

And while I DO have an import-capable Saturn(<3 for Sakura Taisen), sorry, I don't have $90 lying around for a shooter. :wtf:

By the way, anyone remotely fond of this genre needs to go pick up Sigma Star Saga for GBA. Like, now.

Think Illusion of Gaia meets Gradius. Seriously; it's one of the coolest RPG concepts ever. Cool story, too.

I didn't want to post this in the XBOX360 thread because it was still far off, but there's this new NAOMI shooter called Senko no Ronde that will be headed for the XBOX360 next spring in Japan.  I can only hope that this game will be brought to America.

Smash TV was one of the hardest shooters I played.

The weeeee with H is the FALSE weeeeeee. It emanates a different energy, something negative in a certain way.

You will soon be affected by the bad luck that the weeeee with H provides to the user. I strongly advise you to stop using it as soon as possible.

Or it will be too late. =[

I just can't bring myself to create a new topic, especially since 2D shooters receive so little attention.  First off is the Gradius Collection for the PSP so you now have a legitimate excuse to throw your PSP across the room: "I threw the PSP because the game was hard, not because SONY is stupid. "

Next is Radirgy/Radilgy/Ragirugi from Milestone, the makers of Chaos Field.  Chaos Field was a weird game because every stage was a boss battle.  Radirgy/Radilgy/Rajirugi looks like a Flash cartoon; think Alien Hominid graphics plus Gunbird II gameplay.  I only have the PS2 version called Precious; the Gamecube port is called Generic.  The game is easier than your average shooter because the game slows down every time enemy bullets are fired.

Finally we have IBARA, the spiritual successor to Battle Garegga on the SEGA Saturn.  Cave may have published this title, but the developers were former members of Raizing who originally made Battle Garegga.  One reason why the game is interesting is because you must battle a family of hot girls and their even hotter mom; enter the site and see for yourself.  Another point of interest is that it plays just like Battle Garegga with incredible detail and shrapnel coming off of everything.  I only wish the bullets were easier to see.  They're a combination of Cave's pink bullets and Raizing's long bullets, resulting in tiny but long pink bullets.  I also wished that Cave could have included a port of Battle Garegga onto the disc.  IBARA is 3 gigs, but most of that data are junk used to inflate the size of the disc.  Cave could have easily fit Battle Garegga onto the disc.

I think Metal Slug would be considered a 2D shooter, although purists are hesitant to define Metal Slug as such.  To such purists a 2D shooter (or shmup for the hardcore) is a shooting game that progresses in 2D with forced vertical or horizontal movement.  It's that distinction that makes another character-based game like Shikigami no Shiro a true shmup and stuff like Contra or Metal Slug not true shmups.  Here's where I fall in this: Metal Slug is more of a shmup than something like Space Harrier.
