2D shooters may be dying in America, but Japan still makes them.  Who can forget the good old days where the number of times you pressed the shoot button was exceeded by the number of bullets you had to dodge, and all you had going for you was your own skill?  I've only played some of the newer 2D shooters that were released on the PlayStation 2 like R-Type Final, Gradius V, Shikigami no Shiro II, Psyvariar 2 (Korean shooter), ESPGaluda, dodonpachi Dai-Ou-Jou, Mushihimesama, and a few others I can't remember.

I'm still a fan of Raiden, Gradius, R-Type, and Tyrian... a lot of old-skool goodness going on with those titles.

For the NES I used to love Contra and Super Contra, and the sadistically hard Gradius. I have several 2-D space shooters on my computer now.

Current piano projects: None atm.

Some of my performances: Feux D'artifice, by Claude Debussy, La Cathedrale Engloutie, by Debussy, Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62 no. 1, by Frederic Chopin, Ballade no. 1 in G Minor, by Chopin, Amberley Wild Brooks, by John Ireland,Prelude in D Minor, Op. 28 No. 24, by Chopin

Show me a person who describes anything as "overrated", and I'll show you a person who's run out of good ideas.

Duck Hunt would is a light gun game. I mean stuff like Raiden, R-Type, Gradius, Twin Bee, Ikaruga, and any game where you pilot this little thing and shoot alot of junk and dodge even more junk.

This might seem kinda corny, but does Galaxian on the TI-83 calculator count? I've spent many a math class playing that sucker nonstop, haha. It got a weird cult following in my school, and we'd have little mini-tournaments in class and the teacher would never catch us.  :D

If you move and shoot stuff, it's a shooter.  Even those cheap handhelds from Radio Shack with shooting games count as shooters.

Hehe... I have Galaxian on my TI-82 and my TI-85... great times...

I even had initially forgotten about Xevious, Vapor Trail, Viewpoint, Raptor, and Stargunner (the latter having just recently been made freeware).
