So after a long wait, I've finally got my hands on the Omega PX pad, from Precision Dance Pads. Gone are the days of having to play Exceed SE with a soft mat; now I've got every song from every mix all in one place, with a really awesome custom pad to play them on.

After getting it out of the shipping box, setup was a breeze. Plugged it into the control box, and plugged the control box into a USB port; Windows automatically installed the drivers and I was set. Went right into Stepmania and was able to set the inputs without a hitch.

As for the pad itself, it's honestly really awesome. Weighing only about 20 pounds and being only about an inch thick, it's very portable, so if you can't have it on the floor at all times, you can lift it up and lean it against the wall, or put it in a closet, or whatever. The base is made out of a sturdy piece of wood, while the top is covered with some kind of plastic, which feels very tough and resilient, kinda like plexiglass, but thinner. It's technically not a metal pad, being that it's made of wood and plastic, but it's very well-built and feels sturdy. The makers claim that the pad has no weight limit, and honestly, I'll believe it.

It's not as good as the arcade pads, obviously, but it's a massive step up from any soft pad. The arrows are very responsive all over, and when stepped on, they press downward just a *little* bit, enough to feel that you've hit the arrow. Unlike arcade pads though, the arrows are raised up, and the areas around them (the 'metal' parts) are recessed, at least, compared to the arrows. This provides a good enough way for you to feel where your feet are, on the pad.

I played a variety of songs from level 8 to 16, and it felt great. No pad misses, no ghost steps or anything. The pads take a bit of pressure to trigger, just like the arcade pads. You can't just tap your foot against the arrows like on the soft mats; you really have to press. The sensors are very well designed in this aspect.

Despite how heavy the pad is, it did slide around just a little bit during gameplay. Not enough to notice during the song, but after each song, I would look down and see that the pad had slid backwards 2 or 3 inches. They did include a "floor grip", some kind of rubber mesh thing, but it's only about half the size of the pad, and very thin. It didn't seem to make a difference for the surface I was playing on, which is a hard rug, on top of a concrete basement floor. Not too big of an issue, but still enough that I noticed it.

Overall though, it's a very solid pad, and I'd recommend it for anyone who's sick of soft mats. Obviously arcade pads modded for Stepmania are still the best, but if you don't have access to those, Precision Dance Pads are the next best thing.

I'm still in the process of recording and editing videos; I'll upload them as they complete. I've got one ready at the moment:

With Step F2, I've got every song from every mix (with BGAs included, up to NX2), so if you'd like to request me playing a certain song, just say so!

Just...nothing over level 15, because I don't have a bar yet.

I should also mention that they make rubber grips for throw rugs, and this would help prevent your pad from sliding on a hard floor, although those will probably be overkill (in size) for one pad. Rubber mats also won't help as much if you have the pad on carpet or a rug, but they'll be better than nothing. You can also buy drawer liner at Walmart or stores like it. That's what I have under my homemade bar covers.

Ah, the legendary Pawprint graces us with his presence!

Yeah, they included a rubber mesh thing with the pad, but it's only half the size of the pad, and doesn't seem to work very well.

I was thinking of just using good ol' duct tape like I would do with my soft mats, but just placing it on the bottom of the pad, instead of taping the edges to the floor like I would with the soft mat.

A couple more videos. One really hard, and one really easy.

Ineffective Boss Without Power - S18

Pom Pom Pom S7

I really need to put my cameras on top of something soft so that they stop shaking so much with my apparently earthquake-causing steps.

Also holy shit, the Ineffective Boss Without Power video already has a copyright claim thing on it. Jeez. Though it claims that the copyrighted music is only between 0:21 and 1:03, so...kek.

Awesome, I'm impressed they work so well.  I'd probably have gotten a couple of those instead of a machine for the portability, heh. Here's hoping you can get a solid bar  :)
