Okay, here's what happened.

I entered the singing contest in the Chicago Korean Festival. It was a $30 entry fee with the grand prize being a round trip ticket to Korea.

The qualifying round was Saturday night. I was the only non-Korean. We sang short versions of our chosen songs. There was a group that did Girls' Generation "Gee," a group that did 2NE1's "Fire," a duo that did a Drunken Tiger song, and a group that did DJ Doc's "Run To You." I did Cherry Filter's "Romantic Cat." After performing I was interviewed by the Korea Daily newspaper. I made it through to the next round.

The finals was Sunday night. The other groups and individuals performed their songs in full. Btw, "Run to You" was awesome and those guys were crazy. (I've got video.) I performed my song in full and wore a hat with cat ears that my bf bought me at Anime Central. I felt pretty good about it. 3 more people performed and then it was time to announce the winners.

People went up and got their prizes. The DJ Doc guys won a karaoke machine. I actually felt disappointed that I didn't win a karaoke machine. Then this guy kept pushing me towards the stage and I wasn't sure what was going on. Then they called my number and told me to come on stage. They said I loved Korean culture, gave myself a Korean name and now they're giving me a chance to go to Korea. OMG! I think I screamed!

I sang an encore and then got interviewed by the TV station I used to work for and gave the newspaper more information.

I don't think it's sunk in yet. I didn't think I was going to be able to go to Korea until I graduated in like 2010 and even then it would be a lot of money to come up with. I'm so happy.

I wanna kick his ass. I wanna have a son, so I can raise him to kick this guy's ass. Correction: I wanna have a daughter, so I can raise her to kick this guy's ass.

It's going to be a while since I have to apply for my passport and I probably can't do that until next week (I don't have $100 right now). So at least 5 to 7 weeks from now. I'm thinking end of December and the beginning of January. I could stay 3 months if I want to but that would require a visa (I'm sure) and a lot of money. I have 3 months to decide when I'm going and then trade my certificate for a ticket. (and pay taxes and surcharges) The black out dates are 12/8 through 12/23.

I looked it up and I can stay 90 days without a visa. I'm thinking of going right after Spring semester which would be late May. I need to spend as little money as possible so I'm thinking of staying in a guest house. This one is in Sinchon which Art says is near Enter: http://www.alphaguesthouse.net/gnuboard4/bbs/su01.php
At the current exchange rate it's $15.50 a night. I would probably end up cooking most of my food and that place provides free ramen. :) Davyn, will you still be in Seoul?

Yeah, I should still be here. Here's a map from that place to Enter.

Going from 신촌역 to Enter takes about 10 minutes by foot, so that guest house is pretty close. As far as the exchange rate goes, I've heard it stabilizes during Summer but should work in our favor again after that.

So I have 2 possbilities, let me know which ones you think would be better:

Leave Chicago on the 24th of December and come back on the 9th of January.
OR
Leave May 17th and come back August 17th.

The second option would cost much more money and I would probably do home stay instead of a guest house or even youth hostel.
