This new Ubuntu Kernell will be available on Oct 29

Here the most outstanding changes:

- Boot Experience

We've done some work on improving the overall look and feel of booting the system. Please open bugs with the tag "ubuntu-boot-experience" on any messages you see flashed after grub loads and before the new Ubuntu Splash screen (xsplash) displays. If you have trouble catching them before the splash screen loads, you can also check vt1 or dmesg output for copies of these messages. We also accept photos or video attachments if that's easier, however please make sure the text is readable.

- Software Center

Ubuntu 9.10 Beta includes the Ubuntu Software Center, replacing 'Add/Remove' in the Applications menu. We kindly request users to try it out, and report any bugs they find.

- GNOME

Ubuntu 9.10 Beta includes the latest GNOME 2.28 desktop environment with a number of great new features:

*Empathy has replaced Pidgin as the default instant messaging client, introducing the Telepathy framework.
*The gdm 2.28 login manager is a complete rewrite compared to the version in earlier Ubuntu releases, permitting a more integrated login experience.

- Application development with Quickly

Quickly makes it easy for developers to make new applications for Ubuntu, and to share those application with other Ubuntu users via .deb packages or personal package archives.

- Linux kernel 2.6.31

Ubuntu 9.10 Beta includes the 2.6.31-11.36 kernel based on 2.6.31.1. The kernel ships with Kernel Mode Setting enabled for Intel graphics (see below). linux-restricted-modules is deprecated in favour of DKMS packages.

- New Intel video driver architecture available for testing

The Intel video driver has switched from the "EXA" acceleration method to the new "UXA", solving major performance problems of Ubuntu 9.04. Ubuntu 9.10 Beta also features kernel mode setting by default on Intel hardware, which reduces boot-time flickering and dramatically speeds up suspend/resume.

- New profiles

In addition to the above changes to AppArmor itself, several profiles were added. Enforcing profiles for ntpd, the GNOME document viewer (evince), and libvirt are enabled by default. Complain mode profiles for Dovecot are now available in the apparmor-profiles package. A new profile is provided for Firefox as well, though it is disabled by default. Users can enable AppArmor sandboxing of their browser by running:

$ sudo aa-enforce /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox-3.5

Please see the SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase for a full listing of readily available profiles in Ubuntu.

ugraded my shit, and oh my holy fuck the new Intel drivers are a godsend. Now when i want to watch a video on my old POS abacus, I dont have to shrink it to half it's size. I can actually ENLARGE it without losing a single fps. Also it stopped forcing 1024x768 on my 19" monitor. I get a full 1280x1024.

You have no idea how big of a deal this is for me.

In my opinion, Ubuntu is the most disgusting Linux available. GNOME is also a disgusting desktop environment. Fortunately Ubuntu offers KDE and Enlightenment also, otherwise I would have to feel extremely sorry for its users. :)

However, as much as I hate Ubuntu, it is a great way to jump into Linux, and so if anyone ever even thought about trying it but still hasn't done it, you might want to give this a shot. People are raving about the improvements they have added in 9.10.

And then, of course, once you sort of know you're way around, I recommend using absolutely anything else. I personally use Sabayon and Gentoo, but I used to be a Ubuntu user as well, back in the days of Warty Warthog.

Oh well, I shouldn't stink up this thread with whiny crap about how much I hate Ubuntu. It's great to see people promoting Linux, and that's the best thing there is to do.  :D

Nah, it's fine. I personally hate it, but that doesn't make me right. That's really just my opinion based on having used several flavors of Linux, including SuSE/OpenSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, Sabayon, and Vector. I have also messed around with FreeBSD and PC-BSD, and I must say, if my hardware worked better with the BSDs, I would honestly use those. In the meantime, what I have works great.

Really, though, I think Ubuntu's biggest problem is a bunch of people who have no idea what they're doing attempt to help solve every problem anyways, and so a bunch of users end up kludging their way through Linux, learning things the wrong way.

Really, the best idea is to use the distribution you find the most comfortable. Starting out, this will probably be Ubuntu. Maybe OpenSUSE.

I should stop derailing this thread, though, and leave it at, enjoy the new Ubuntu release. It's good to see the project is still alive and helping to get new users into Linux.

And if you need Linux help, talk to me.

I upgraded the Netbook Remix in the eee PC my dad gave me and I really like the changes. It runs much better and the home screen looks much better too. It even comes with a torrent client built in.

Found a new reason to love ubuntu a few days ago.

If you let a flash video from your favorite flash video website like xhamster or xnxx load fully, you can go into your /tmp folder and pull the whole .flv out and save it permanently to your computer. I've collected SO MUCH porn using this method.

Yeah xxxtaco, another great thing in Linux. :D

Just be sure to be quick on getting it, because /tmp gets cleared often.
