Other people might have more to say about the World Cup than I do, but I thought I'd start a thread for those interested.
For one, I'm pretty interested in seeing how Cote d'Ivoire will do since Didier Drogba is supposedly a real star, and we tend not to see African nations go all the way to the end. South Africa's also got the huge home fanbase, so I'd really like to see them do well too.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 17:43 CST :: 6/13/2010
As a Brazilian it's obvious who I'm rooting for, but I love seeing the underdogs perform well. South Africa's tie was great. On the other hand, this sucks because I work a graveyard shift so I'm always passed out during the games...

Sorry for asking this but I'm just a bit lost: Did USA qualified for the WC2010?
And uhm... didn't knew that TS was Brazilian...
btw, Go Mexico...

Yep, the US tied England 1-1 in their first round match today. They got the goal in the 40th minute when Green (the British goalie) made a really bad fumble.
I like how Americans are calling it an "upset" already.

For some reason i feel like Italy will be the biggest dissapointment on the tournament <<
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 09:43 CST :: 6/14/2010
My goodness, it's unbearable watching matches. Those fucking vuvuzelas sound like killer bees raping dying goats in a slaughterhouse. I can't stand them. Good going south africa, you finally get a world cup and you're going to be remembered for being the world cup that was most excruciating to watch due to shitty monotone plastic horns.
Somebody posted a picture on facebook that made me laugh out loud. Shows how much the crowd's noises differentiate based on what's going on:
Posted by: luciusxx on 11:58 CST :: 6/14/2010
The French are blaming their poor performance on the vuvuzelas. too.

South Korea claims first win in this World Cup FTW! (ROK 2 - Greece - 0)
You've GOT to be here to see the devout population of the ROK for the incredible fans they are!
DAE~ HAN MIN GUK!

Aw...I was expecting more out of South Africa today. Uruguay's a really tough team, but the African spirit just feels so shot now...it was pretty sad to see the fans walking out of the stadium already.
Switzerland is still holding up to be a bit of a Cinderella story though.
Best of luck to South Korea against Argentina tomorrow!
Posted by: Seoul_Man on 08:52 CST :: 6/17/2010
Sorry Argentina, but you humiliated us, and drove us into the dirt.
4-1. Seriously, they're in their own league, and to be fair, I'll admit we (Korea) were careless at points.
Posted by: Daisuke Master on 14:51 CST :: 6/17/2010
I came to share my happiness...
FR 2-0 MX :3
Posted by: kpopgrrl on 23:12 CST :: 6/17/2010
I think Korea will beat Nigeria. The only problem is getting Argentina to lose a match...
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 01:31 CST :: 6/18/2010
Not really a problem. The second best team in the group continues on in the world cup.
Posted by: kpopgrrl on 02:30 CST :: 6/18/2010
Ah, still kind of new to this. I really wish I was more into soccer when the World Cup was in Chicago back in like 1992 or something.
Posted by: And4713 on 02:59 CST :: 6/18/2010
Reasons I am not watching or keeping track of the world cup:
(example: < http://www.vuvuzela-time.co.uk/ph-online.net) >
2. Nobody in the US really gives a shit.
3. Seriously number 1 is really bad.
I do however find the resulting memetic vuvuzela commentary hilarious.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 05:13 CST :: 6/18/2010
1994. And the world cup was nationwide, with Chicago providing one of the venues.
EDIT: I'm almost certain Korea's getting through to the next round. Each team in their group only has one game left. Korea has to beat Nigeria, a team that sucks ass. The only criteria that also has to be met is that Argentina has to beat Greece. Yeah, that won't be a problem whatsoever.
fake edit: ahahaha, and when the Koreans make it to round 2 in second place, guess who the two candidates are that they're likely to face? England and the United States.
Posted by: Seoul_Man on 10:02 CST :: 6/18/2010
I call shenanigans on the ref that called the US third goal in the Slovenia game a foul. Thanks to that poor judgment, the game ends in a tie. Better than nothing I guess, but whatever.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 10:05 CST :: 6/18/2010
That ref will never be allowed to work in another international game again. What a joke.
Posted by: kpopgrrl on 10:09 CST :: 6/18/2010
Yeah, I was about to say something. Freakin' refs robbing the win from us. That goal was good and that dude who grabbed the U.S. player should have gotten a penalty against him.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 10:11 CST :: 6/18/2010
*dudes. Plural. It looked like THREE Slovenians were doing it.
Posted by: Insane Steve on 17:11 CST :: 6/18/2010
No surprise the reffing is going this ridiculously against America, it's not like the international community hates the U.S. for various reasons or anything
I honestly don't believe the game was fixed, but I think that ref has a personal vendetta against the U.S.
And I'm actually hoping the U.S. doesn't advance out of group C because this country doesn't fucking deserve it (nor will it care). But still, that call was complete trash. And the fact he doesn't have to justify it at all is the best part. Seriously what kind of sport lets the refs deicde the entire outcome like that and then lets them say NOTHING about it? This is why Americans will NEVER get into soccer. Well that and the fact that the score doesn't end up like 102-94 or 24-17 or [not 0]-[not 0] like the "popular" American sports. Short attention span gogogogogo
Also the vuvuzela is the best musical instrument ever made, I don't know what you all are talking about. BZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZ
Posted by: Jared on 10:15 CST :: 6/19/2010
What the fuck?
The fact that the US is a political shithole right now doesn't have any bearing on what its soccer players "deserve". If they work hard and play better than the other teams, they've earned the right to progress.
Posted by: the_peacemaker on 14:19 CST :: 6/20/2010
So is this also how you feel when it comes to Americans putting out their all in cross-country skiing, fencing, volleyball, ski jumping, rowing...any other Olympic sport that isn't VASTLY publicized in America?
No need to be so cynical, dude...just wish your favorite players well. If they love the sport and they're on a mission to win, that's all that matters.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 14:27 CST :: 6/20/2010
If there's any country in the world that doesn't appreciate the sport, it's the United States. I can see where Insane Steve is coming from.
Posted by: the_peacemaker on 15:05 CST :: 6/20/2010
Are you saying I can't? Because that's not the point...the point is that it's the players' game and no one else's. Who cares what the rest of the country thinks? I understand that a win for other countries may instill more civic pride, but that doesn't mean the Americans shouldn't do well and then congratulate themselves on a job well done.
In any case, we all probably think similar things but just don't express them with the same level of frankness.
And in the end, we all have one thing we can say in perfect unison:
So anyway...with the way Brazil is playing, it looks like Group G is pretty much a race for the second Top 16 slot now.
Posted by: Insane Steve on 18:01 CST :: 6/20/2010
"right now"? Where have you been the last decade?
What I meant was that Americans just don't care about soccer. At all. So, why should a team who doesn't care about the sport win when there's plenty of nations who celebrate the World Cup like a national holiday? I mean, I can see where you're coming from especially from the U.S. players' point of view (and I still think the disallowed goal is some of the worst bullshit ever) but still I just can't hope for our country to do extremely well in this event. If the U.S. somehow does very well, then great for them. I just can't cheer for them even though I've been outside the U.S. for a total of 5 days of my life.
I am an extraordinarily cynical person by nature.
I wanted the Americans to do well in e.g. the winter Olympics, honestly (didn't help that the sport I followed most was curling and the U.S. shat bricks at that). I mean, obviously other countries "follow" the sports in the Olympics more than the U.S. but it's nowhere near as drastic as with soccer.
all that having been said, and probably the part of this post that'll draw more hate than anything:
Vuvuzelas are freaking awesome. Haters gonna hate
Posted by: kpopgrrl on 22:54 CST :: 6/20/2010
You're obviously not watching the games. There are "American" (as you call them) fans in the stands cheering on the team. Did you ever think that our team doing better than it ever has would make people actually start paying attention more than they ever have?
And I'm cheering for the U.S. and S. Korea (that's where I am right now).
Posted by: Jared on 23:08 CST :: 6/20/2010
Living in this political shithole. I used "right now" because I'm not cynical enough to think that the situation will never improve.
Posted by: Seoul_Man on 15:23 CST :: 6/22/2010
Korea ties with Nigeria, but clinches it's place as runner-up for Group B!
Posted by: the_peacemaker on 15:43 CST :: 6/22/2010
Which means in their second-round match, they're against...
Uruguay. Good luck, guys.
To all the Mexican Pumpers here: hope your team fares well against Argentina, too.
The least we can say is that nothing is predictable this time around.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 17:57 CST :: 6/22/2010
I made a "fantasy" final match bracket... I think the Netherlands might win this world cup.
Second round matches:
Uruguay vs. South Korea
Slovenia/USA/England vs. Ghana/Germany
Netherlands vs. Italy
Brazil vs. Switzerland or Chile
Argentina vs. Mexico
Probably Serbia vs. Slovenia/USA/England
Paraguay vs. Japan
Chile/Switzerland/Spain vs. Portugal
Uruguay/Korea (doesn't matter, either one will lose) vs. Slovenia/England/US/Ghana/Germany
Netherlands vs. Brazil (this game will decide who wins the world cup, in my opinion)
Argentina vs. (probably) Serbia
Paraguay vs. Portugal
[Team that doesn't matter] vs. Brazil or Netherlands
Argentina vs. Portugal
Brazil or Netherlands vs. Argentina or Portugal
I don't see any way the winner won't be one of those four.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 11:07 CST :: 6/23/2010
Okay, after that last game, I'm a believer. Good luck to the US.
Posted by: Insane Steve on 12:00 CST :: 6/23/2010
I may be a cynical asshole towards the U.S. here but after watching the refs try their best to fuck over the U.S. again (ANOTHER phantom disallowed goal and a yellow for letting the ball hit them in the nowhere near the hands, not to mention Algeria could have pulled out a gun and shot the U.S. goalie and the refs would've done nothing), I cheered for that goal. The U.S. deserved to win the group with how they played, pure and simple. I would actually have been pissed had they not made it solely because of complete trash refereeing (of course, if they sucked and didn't make it for that reason I'd be laughing).
Posted by: the_peacemaker on 12:32 CST :: 6/24/2010
Nice picking there.
Posted by: Matador on 14:58 CST :: 6/24/2010
Woa my words were marked after all o0
Posted by: Seoul_Man on 11:15 CST :: 6/26/2010
It's as I figured, Korea has a pattern, almost a rep for losing to South Americans. That's the simplest I can and will say because I'm no racist, and I am never satisfied with losing.
Posted by: Insane Steve on 17:17 CST :: 6/26/2010
you know, I was almost actually thinking about changing the way I thought about the U.S. team in this tournament
HJAHAHAHAHA WTG LOSING TWO STRAIGHT TOURNAMENTS TO A COUNTRY HALF YOUR POPULACE CANNOT SPELL AND NO MORE THAN 5% OF YOUR POPULACE CAN LOCATE ON A MAP
Posted by: Seoul_Man on 01:54 CST :: 6/27/2010
Well, I still got something out of the Korea/Uruguay match that no one can top, I got to see Clon AND Koyote on stage before the game.
Got to hear First Love and Innocence (Sunjong), so there, highlight of the game.
Posted by: FB_Strike on 04:17 CST :: 6/30/2010
Welp, quarter finals are in
Uruguay vs Ghana
Netherlands vs Brazil
Argentina vs Germany
Paraguay vs Spain
Other than the fact that the biggest letdown of the tornament were Italy and France, I see Uruguay vs Ghana as the underdog matchup of the tournament. What's your opinion?
Posted by: Noodles on 09:30 CST :: 6/30/2010
I'm surprised Portugal got knocked out by Spain. They were doing pretty good...
But I think Brazil will beat Netherlands this Friday. I'm betting on Brazil vs. Argentina. That game will be tough.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 09:39 CST :: 6/30/2010
The final will definitely be either Brazil or Netherlands vs. Argentina.
Uruguay will beat Ghana and unfortunately Spain will probably beat Paraguay.
Posted by: Pumper Zero on 10:23 CST :: 7/02/2010
It's over for us. D:
Posted by: kpopgrrl on 10:37 CST :: 7/02/2010
This was not cool.
Posted by: Daisuke Master on 11:13 CST :: 7/02/2010
sure it wasn't...
Posted by: Noodles on 10:16 CST :: 7/03/2010
HOW THE FUCK DID GERMANY BEAT ARGENTINA!? 4-0!?!?!? WHAT THE HELL.
This world cup is really different than any other.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 20:29 CST :: 7/03/2010
Wow, who fucking cares about the teams remaining now.
Whoever wins between Uruguay or Netherlands should win, but this likely won't happen. Fuck Germany and Spain - any team that already lost a game shouldn't win it all.
Posted by: FB_Strike on 21:13 CST :: 7/04/2010
But it was sure intresting how the Uruguay striker put their ticket to the semifinals in jeopardy after that handball.
But idk, i guess Germany got this one
Posted by: Matador on 12:02 CST :: 7/07/2010
Lol funny germany and Spain lost to "weak" teams before
Posted by: Insane Steve on 16:46 CST :: 7/07/2010
World Cup squid is 6-0 now hahaha
Posted by: Noodles on 21:08 CST :: 7/07/2010
Spain and Netherlands. Spain was my last guess. Really. I would have said Germany or Argentina any day, but not Spain.
So it looks like Netherlands is taking 1st, Spain 2nd, and Germany 3rd. I swear if this prediction gets whacked up I'm gonna be super pissed.
Posted by: Turkeyslam on 21:36 CST :: 7/07/2010
I hope Netherlands wins.
I like that at the very least we'll have a brand new world cup winner that hasn't gotten it before.
